Dr. Oz was probably the worst possible candidate Republicans could have nominated for the U.S. Senate race in Pennsylvania (or pretty much anywhere really) – and he might not have even seen the nomination if Donald Trump’s initial handpicked candidate of choice had not been forced out of the race due to a number of embarrassing scandals. He’s spent much of the race locked in an embarrassing Twitter feud with his opponent, Lt. Gov. John Fetterman, and he’s largely been losing.
First it was his shopping trip for crudite at Wegener’s Grocery (which doesn’t exist) and made him the butt of social media jokes that last to this day. Unable to take it in stride, Oz decided to go there and attack Fetterman for the stroke he suffered just days before the primary.
There was a flood of outrage (and rightfully so) on social media following Oz’s suggestion that Fetterman’s diet was the reason he had a stroke – but this is who the Republicans are now. They did, after all, rally behind a guy who openly mocked a disabled journalist at one of his rallies. Now, Oz’s despicable behavior is having even more repercussions for him, as over 100 physicians in Pennsylvania have gotten behind an open letter denouncing Oz’s candidacy for the Senate, accusing him of poor practice as a physician.
Even Oz himself has admitted that a number of the cures he promotes for money are questionable at best – and as a candidate he’s made no secret that he’d support an abortion ban in the Senate, and do everything he could to undermine the Affordable Care Act. Make no mistake that healthcare, an issue where the general public overwhelmingly trusts the Democrats, is back to being a major concern for the upcoming midterm elections. Let’s do everything we can to get John Fetterman to the Senate and strengthen our majority.
