Even as Fulton County Georgia District Attorney Fani Willis has ramped up and expanded her criminal investigation into Donald Trump’s 2020 election crimes, the question has been just how big she’s decided to go.

It wasn’t surprising that she subpoenaed Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to testify against Trump, given that much of the public is well aware of how Raffensperger famously refused Trump’s illegal demand that he alter the vote totals. Willis’ investigation couldn’t have been seen as legitimate unless she brought in Raffensperger as a witness.

But now Willis is also subpoenaing Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr. He also refused Trump’s illegal election demands, but the story ended up getting far fewer headlines. If Willis were looking to play things safe or keep her case limited in some way, she could have stopped with just Raffensperger. Subpoenaing multiple top elected officials in her own state is about as aggressive as one can get.

Given that Carr and Raffensperger are public officials, they’d likely be wrecking their careers by defying their subpoenas – not to mention the potential for obstruction charges. And given that Carr and Raffensperger are not accused of any underlying crimes, they’re not putting themselves at any legal risk by going ahead and testifying. So it’s highly likely that they’ll both comply and testify against Trump, whether they really want to or not.

The upshot here is that Fani Willis is going all-in on this. She’s knowingly betting her career on being able to indict and convict Donald Trump on serious criminal charges. Not only is that the right thing to do, it also means she’s fairly certain she can win.
